Ginger's Retirement

(by Gary Godfrey - June 16, 2009)

Everyone asks me about Ginger’s retirement?

And my answer is always the same: “I really don’t know how the woman ever had time to work!”

For example: She recently started a Garden Club. Their first Garden Walk is scheduled for Saturday, June 27th from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. A rain date has been set for the following day, June 28th.

This means I’ve been recruited, drafted, and manipulated into helping prepare our happy domain into a garden paradise. We’ve weeded, hacked, sawed, planted, pulled, painted, added and purchase more garden “things” in the last few week’s than most people do in a lifetime.

I wake up with sore muscles I didn’t know I had. I’ve taken more Tylenol in the last couple of weeks, than I did all of last year!

“What do you call this kind of gardens?” I asked truthfully one evening.

“I call it garden art,” she explained.  “It’s the ability to take a small space and yard, and transform it into your own creation. I want people to see how you can add your own artist touch to everything you do.”

“Don’t you mean we do?” I added quickly. “You mean people actually pay to come see what others have created?”

“Exactly,” she disclosed. “Where else can you go for $5.00 and see beautiful gardens, share ideas, enjoy refreshments, and get rejuvenated about your home and God’s masterpieces?”

GRO invites you to share the afternoon with them. Tickets will be available from any member, Marshall’s Shell on US 36, Arens Corp., 395 S High St., Covington, OHio and the Bradford Public Library. Tickets can also be purchase the day of the walk at any of the garden locations. A list of garden locations is printed in this week’s Advertiser on page 5.

I personally invite you to come and share the labor of Ginger’s hired hand. There’s not too many men that can tell you the difference between an Earth Angel Hosta and a Blue Chip Butterfly Bush.

Gardening requires lots of water - most of it in the form of perspiration.  ~Lou Erickson

What a man needs in gardening is a cast-iron back, with a hinge in it.  ~Charles Dudley Warner, My Summer in a Garden, 1871

There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling.  ~Mirabel Osler

Gardening is a matter of your enthusiasm holding up until your back gets used to it.  ~Author Unknown

This week’s bottom line: When I die, the most peaceful place they could bury me, is in my garden. GLG
