Let Me Tell You About My Tattoo

(by Gary Godfrey - February 15, 2010)

Shhh. Don’t tell my kids.

I got a tattoo on Sunday. I know what you’re thinking. Gary, your mother would roll-over in her grave if she knew what you did?  And, you’re probably correct. I could hear her say to me, “young man, don’t you remember Leviticus chapter 19, verse 28.”

You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord.

Yeah, I know the verse mom. But remember the verses above this one. It stated: the people of Israel were also commanded to avoid mixing fibers in garments.

Nor shall a garment of mixed linen and wool come upon you. Leviticus 19:19.

Therefore, if someone chose to consider a tattoo sinful, then they would have to toss all their cotton/polyester clothing too!

But lets get back to Sunday night, and my new tattoo.

Daughter number one (Kelly) invited Ginger and I to a Sunday night Valentines dinner. Their entire family would be present, including our only great grandchild, little Roman.

We had just finished our delicious Italian dinner, and were enjoying hot coffee and tea with apple pie a la mode, when little Roman came to the table to show me his press-on tattoo. “See pampa, it’s a rainbow,” he explained with excitement.

“Hey, I’d like to be in your club. Do I have to get a tattoo too?” I inquired to the three year old.

I wasn’t sure if he knew what I was saying, but he took off to the bedroom lickity-split.  On his return, he handed me the samples of all his sticker tattoo's. “This one grampie,” he pointed out.

Granddaughter number two (Marie) also had a friend at the house, Brook Reineke. You might remember her father, Carl, who use to have a Ford dealership in Covington.

Brook was also initiated into the club, so I asked her to help Roman and me with the sticker. Presto!  In just one minute I had this beautiful rainbow tattoo. Roman was elated.

And you thought I had gone off the deep end!

Just remember: Grandchildren are God's way of compensating us for growing old.

This week’s bottom line: Grandchildren are the dots that connect the lines from generation to generation.
