The Best Cherry Pie, I've Ever Tasted!

(by Gary Godfrey - November 28, 2011)

Ginger and I went with Bill and RuthAnn Shafer (while recently in Florida) to visit our Florida pastor and wife just outside of Frostproof, and closer to Lake Wales. The pastor and his wife live way out in the country among the snakes and wild boar. To say they’re country folk, would be an understatement. During our visit, Audrey asked each of us if we wanted a piece of cherry pie?

Never to let an opportunity pass me by, I immediately said, “yes”.

The others followed suit, including pastor Albert.

Because I shouted yes first, I was served immediately. The pie was still warm, and I must have been extra hungry, because I couldn’t put my fork down.  “This is the best cherry pie I’ve had in a long time,” I shouted to Audrey in the kitchen.  “Its so good, and it’s sweet, not tart. If I had a dip of ice cream on top -- it would simply be perfect,” I expressed sincerely.

By this time all of us had been served, and I was ready for a second piece.  “Would you like another piece of pie Gary?” Audrey asked.

“No thank you, I better let my sugar settle down,” I divulged. “But it’s very tempting,” I declared

Our conversation went from chickens to paintings -- but I kept interjecting my opinion of the cherry pie. Everyone chimed in, and if there would have been a vote -- Audrey would have won the Darke County Fair’s  blue ribbon for the perfect homemade cherry pie.

Just when we were all in agreement, Audrey added, “I really don’t know what all the fuss is about, the pie is simply a frozen Mrs. Smith from the grocery store?”

You could have dropped a tennis ball in my mouth, it was that wide opened!  “You mean to tell me that the cherry pie was not home made,” I ranted.

“That’s right, we picked it up a the grocery store this morning. “All I did was stick it into the oven,” she smiled.

This week’s bottom line: It was still the best cherry pie, I’ve ever tasted.  A boy doesn't have to go to war to be a hero; he can say he doesn't like pie when he sees there isn't enough to go around.
