OSGOOD — In honor of Red Cross Month, a local business is doing its part to replenish the nations' low blood supply by encouraging area residents to donate blood.
During March and April, Winner's Meats, located in Osgood, will offer current and new blood donors a free pound of bulk whole hog sausage when they donate blood at one of three scheduled blood drives in Maria Stein, Minster and St. Henry.
President of Robert Winner Sons, Inc., Brian Winner said he was excited to promote the local blood drives and encouraged others to do so.
"I personally have been donating blood as others have for many years now. It is such a gratifying and wonderful feeling being able to help someone in this way," Winner said.
Winner has served as a volunteer firemen and a driver for the Osgood Rescue Squad for over 26 years. In that time, he has seen many area residents in need of blood donations. The need continues both locally and nationally, he said.
"Unfortunately, with all the storms across the nation this past year and even around this area alone, so many blood drives have been canceled and this has caused the nation's blood supply to be at its lowest level in many years," Winner said.
Winner said after brainstorming for ideas to support local blood drives, he came up with the “Pound for Pint” idea.
"I thought this would be an excellent opportunity for Robert Winner Sons Inc. to give something back to our surrounding communities. Since our family business has been servicing this area for over 83 years, this would be a great way to benefit the people that are in need and at the same time give back to the community," Winner said. "We are very excited to be assisting the Red Cross with this promotion as they are such a deserving and wonderful organization by helping the people who are in such need on a daily basis."
Area residents may receive a free pound of whole hog bulk sausage from Winner's Meats when they donate blood at the following locations and dates:
• Monday, March 28, at the Maria Stein American Legion Hall from noon – 6 p.m.
• Monday, April 11, at the Minster Knights of Columbus Hall from noon – 6 p.m.
• Wednesday, April 20, at the St. Henry American Legion from 12:30 – 6:30 p.m.
