Birthday Weekend

The past weekend was the week of birthday parties.

Saturday night, Ginger and I traveled to the Troy Hayner Cultural Center to help Virginia Kenney celebrate her 80th birthday with husband Royce and the entire family and many, many friends.

If you’ve never been to the Troy Hayner Cultural Center, shame on you. This unique mansion is full of art, history and lore. Virginia had her party on the third floor with fantastic hors d’oeuvres and a genuine Swing Band.

Ginger and I were more than impressed, and very grateful that the Kinney’s included us in their celebration. Thank you Virginia and Royce. What a fantastic family you have. Especially “Red Boots Charlotte”, who greeted us with charm and enthusiasm. She made us feel like we were part of your family.

On Sunday, we were celebrating our oldest great-grand child, Roman Rank, at Mama’s house (daughter number one) Kelly and David Rank.

It’s really special when you get four generations together, and the relatives on both sides help you remember how old you’re getting.

“It’s hard to believe that Roman is eight years old,” I murmured to Ginger.

“I know, it seems like yesterday he was born,” she said with teary eyes.

I have to admit; you haven’t been to a birthday party like the Rank families holding until our daughter Kelly married David. When one of the small children has a birthday, the entire clan shows up. The Rank’s are very strong in numbers, and most of them show up with food and gifts. The first time we shared a birthday, it reminded me of a family reunion at Christmas time.

Roman’s birthday theme was “Mind Craft”. This is an Internet game that kids play until they can’t see any more.

To me it was just another game, until I saw the birthday gifts. This company has generated a billion dollar industry. From shirts to flash lights. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

This week’s bottom line: The way I see it, you should live everyday like it’s your birthday. Paris Hilton
