Enjoy The Benefits of Giving

A few years ago, Ginger and I told our family that we really don’t need gifts for Christmas. We’re both to the point in our lives, that if we need something, we simply go out and make the purchase.

So we came up with the idea, that we would choose one family every year to enjoy giving year around. And the best part we would provide the money. We decided on $500. The rules were simple, just give the money away to a cause or to a person you feel needs it the most. The only thing you have to do is log your experience, with pictures and the reaction you felt giving. We would then share your experience with the entire family the following Christmas.

We started with our three children. We’ve now decided to go with our grandchildren by age. So far, we’ve been doing these five years. This way the whole family can enjoy the pleasure of giving.

There is away to enjoy the season of giving year round.

L. Make It Personal – Getting personally involved in a cause you care about is particularly rewarding whether you donate your time or personal items. Take the time to look through your “stuff”. We all certainly have way too much “stuff”. Donating these items to someone in need are much better than letting them sitting unused.

2. Be Glad to Give – Whether you’re giving to a loved one or a complete stranger, giving provides you with a warm, fuzzy feeling every time you do it. You have everything from a warm coat to a goat in Africa. You can go to CladtoGive.com to schedule a free pick up with a local charity of your choice.

3. Involve the Family – It’s never too early to teach your little ones that it is better to give than receive. There are many ways to introduce them to giving to others. Wrapping presents, baking cookies, making cards, or sending a shoe box full of gifts to someone in need.

4. Enjoy the Benefits of Giving Back – One of the best things you can do with your slightly used “stuff” is to give them a second life. Did you know that 33.6 percent of overall giving happens in the last three months of the year? Making giving an all around event, you will help yourself to be happier and healthier.

This week’s bottom line: Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.
