Jakell Mitchell, an 18-year-old freshman at Auburn, was shot and killed early Sunday morning during a party at the Tiger Lodge apartment complex, according to AL.com.

Police are conducting an investigation, but no arrests have been made. Capt. Will Matthews says police responded to the apartment complex at 12:25 a.m., where Mitchell suffered a fatal injury.

Mitchell had apparent multiple gunshot wounds and died in the emergency room, the Opelika-Auburn News reports.

That complex was the scene of a June 2012 shooting that left former Auburn players Ladarious Phillips and Ed Christian and a third person dead.

Mitchell, an H-back, missed his senior season at Opelika as he recovered from an ACL injury. He rushed for 392 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2013 as a junior. He made a splash in Auburn’s final preseason scrimmage with a 70-yard pass play, but sat out the 2014 season.

He was expected to contend for a starting spot next year.

Auburn is scheduled to face Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day.
